West Kelowna became its own incorporated city in 2007, separating from the regional district to govern its own growth on the west side of Okanagan Lake, connected to downtown Kelowna by the William R. Bennett Bridge. It's grown quickly since then, but it's kept a distinct identity from Kelowna proper — generally a lower cost of living, more room between neighbours, and a slower pace, while still being a short drive across the bridge to Kelowna's shopping, medical care, and amenities.
For downsizers, West Kelowna's appeal is straightforward: housing costs typically run lower than equivalent properties in Kelowna, with a similar range of ranchers, condos, and townhomes to choose from. Areas like Lakeview Heights and Rose Valley have an established, quieter feel that many retirees find appealing, while still being close enough to Kelowna to keep the same doctors, friends, and routines.
